Call for Modern Press Law: Dr. Sunil Kaushik Announces National Committee for Media Reforms
At the announcement event of the Legal and Advisory Wings of the Editors Club of India held at the India International Centre, New Delhi, National General Secretary Dr. Sunil Kaushik stated in his address that the present era is not just about delivering information, but about maintaining a balance between responsibility, freedom, and accountability in the media.
He emphasized that India needs a modern and effective Press Act that not only safeguards the freedom of journalism but also strengthens its dignity and accountability.
Dr. Kaushik noted that journalism in the country is undergoing rapid transformation due to evolving technological and social changes, while the existing legal framework still largely rests on outdated structures. Therefore, he stressed the urgent need for a serious review of media laws and systems in India, aligning them with international standards.
Announcing a major initiative, he said that the Editors Club of India will soon constitute a national-level special committee comprising legal experts, senior journalists, media analysts, and policy specialists. This committee will conduct an in-depth study of press laws from more than two dozen countries to prepare a practical, robust, and democratic framework for India’s media landscape.
He further informed that the committee will submit a detailed report within six months, which will serve as the basis for initiating a broad national dialogue on media laws and policies.
Dr. Kaushik concluded by stating that the Editors Club of India is not merely an organization of journalists, but is evolving into a strong platform committed to establishing a balance between press freedom, accountability, and national interest.
