“Time to Unite and Empower Journalism”: Amitabh Agnihotri on Launch of Advisory & Legal Wings

During the announcement of the Advisory and Legal Wings, National President Amitabh Agnihotri stated that this is the time to unite, to empower, and to elevate journalism to its highest ideals.

He emphasized that this historic moment is not merely a formal declaration, but a commitment to giving new dimensions to the dignity, accountability, and intellectual leadership of journalism. The establishment of the Legal and Advisory Wings by the Editors Club of India is aimed at ensuring that editors are not only guardians of ideas but also strong guides for society, equipped with an understanding of law and policy.

From the Legal Wing, there is a clear expectation that it will provide editors and media institutions with legal protection, safeguard constitutional rights, and strengthen the fight for freedom of expression. At a time when journalism faces multiple pressures, a structured and efficient legal mechanism is the need of the hour. A sound understanding of the law is what empowers a journalist to remain fearless.

From the Advisory Wing, the expectation is to provide ideological direction, ethical standards, and strategic guidance. An editor is not merely a selector of news, but a participant in nation-building. There is a need for such an advisory structure that can establish the organization not only at the national level but also on the global stage.

He further stated that members of both wings should not remain mere office-bearers, but become examples of responsibility. National interest must remain paramount, the dignity of journalism must be preserved, and the collective strength of the organization should serve both as a shield and a guiding force for editors across the country.
